חסדי יהוה (The Steadfast/Enduring Love of the LORD)...

Texts:

We saw the Genesis text the first Sunday in Lent , and now it comes about again, reminding us of the covenant.  Taken together with the Ephesians text, we see God working in and through creation from the beginning to draw creation to Godself.  What captivates my imagination, however, is the appointed Psalm for this week.  Describing the challenges the people of God faced throughout their wanderings and journeys, God remained steadfast, hearing their cries and responding to their petitions.

The two phrases, "Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress," and "Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind," govern the Psalm in antiphon.  I think these two phrases are telling of our interactions with God.  So often, we find ourselves in messes, often of our own making, and we act as though it happened because God has somehow withdrawn God's hand.  The steadfastness of God weaves itself through our narrative.

Our Creator continues creating, continues bringing reconciliation and healing, and continues coming to us.  It is because God refuses to withdraw God's hand that enables us to cry out in our distress.  God "raises up the needy out of distress, and makes their families like flocks.  The upright see it and are glad; and all wickedness stops its mouth.  Let those who are wise give heed to these things, and consider the steadfast love of the LORD," (Psalm 107:41-43).
