Texts: Psalm 27, Isaiah 4:2-6, Acts 11:1-18

"Who was I, that I could hinder God?" Acts 11:17b

A short, sweet thought for the day. I think this line speaks for itself (but of course, I feel obliged to respond!). So often, we think that God's providence and God's grace/God's silence and God's judgment are based upon our behaviors, based upon what we "do for God." Again and again, we see the Bible telling us that the only consistency with humans is their inconsistency. God, in response to our unfaithfulness, is faithful. God's faithfulness is not dependent upon our faith. God's grace is not dependent upon our deservingness (otherwise, it would not be grace). Clinging to the faith of Christ, we proclaim with Peter, "Who are we, that we could hinder God?" Like a woman in labor, God brings forth in our lives. The Promise comes unbidden, in forms hidden under the opposite: a savior born as a baby in a stable comes, bringing the Promise that God's love will not be stopped, not even by death.
