Texts: Psalm 148, Jeremiah 31:15-17, Matthew 2:13-18
Today is a difficult day to comment on the text. Whereas Matthew's quote from Jeremiah is taken peculiarly out of context (in Jeremiah, which was written around 587 BCE, it describes the return from exile), prying apart the text seems to do no honor to the children that have died (and continue to die) in our world at the hands of Selfishness and Greed.
And so, rather than commenting, I advocate silence. Just a moment of confession, a moment of reality, in which we acknowledge a world in which children are not spared from the violence of war, from the realities of Selfishness and Greed that perpetuate in our societies.
Sometimes, we must acknowledge the sources of darkness that we might seek the Source of Light.
Sometimes, it is with clenched fists and raised voices that we proclaim: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness will not overcome it." The darkness will not overcome the light, even if it is our own darkness into which the light must shine.
