Today we went to the ELCA english-speaking congregation at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jerusalem. Jeni, one of my friends from Augsburg (and now Luther, though she has graduated), preached, and asked me to read. It was amazing to read 1Corinthians 12, a passage about identity in Christ as unity while in Jerusalem. Needless to say, I was floored.
We visited the Western Wall, and I was able to touch it, watch others pray, say a prayer, and back away. There were Jewish women rocking and praying, crying, and stuffing prayers in to the ancient cracks in the wall. It made me wonder if Christians, because we are not attached to a land or a specific place, but to Christ, can understand true devotion to a geographical region. As you can tell, 'land' is a theme we have been talking about since we arrived and will probably continue talking about after we have returned home. For now, I am thankful to see Christ in others, carrying the message outward, away, down from the mountain, because it seems to me - when facing outward - we can bring hope to the world.
